Want to live better for longer? Study shows: HYDRATE

New study shows that staying well hydrated lowers your risk of chronic disease AND helps you live longer than your dehydrated mates. We might be bias, but we reckon these so-called experts are onto something.

A quick look:

  • A new study by the National Institutes of Health published in eBioMedicine looked at the health data of 11,255 adults across 30 years.
  • They found good hydration links to healthy aging + chronic disease prevention because it lowers serum sodium levels.
  • The study found that adults above this range were more likely to be biologically older than their chronological age and at a higher risk of premature death. Eeek.
  • Experts suggest that staying hydrated is key to maintaining healthy serum sodium levels.

What the f*ck is serum sodium?

  • Serum sodium is the amount of sodium relative to the volume of water in the blood.
  • The main culprit for an increase in serum sodium levels is when your fluid intake is too low (aka you're dehydrated, bro).
  • Another lesser known cause for high serum sodium levels can be pinned to issues with the kidneys.

And how does it relate to aging?

It was found that people with ABOVE average serum sodium levels:

  • Were more likely to be biologically older than their chronological age (based on metabolic and cardiovascular health, lung function, and inflammation).
  • Had a substantially increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, such as heart failure, stroke, arterial fibrillation, peripheral artery disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, and dementia.
  • Had an increased risk of premature aging.

So how do I know if my serum sodium levels are too high?

The most common reason for high serum sodium levels is a lack of fluid or dehydration. Dehydration is common, but preventable. Symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Tiredness and low energy
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Dry mouth, lips and eyes
  • Peeing infrequently (less than three or four times a day)

Avoid dehydration by planning ahead

Don't forget, if you’re feeling thirsty it’s likely that you’re already dehydrated.

  • Drink enough fluid daily. That’s 1.5-2.2 liters for women or 2-3 liters for men.
  • Effectively conquer dehydration with the added support of a high quality vitamin and mineral supplementation like The Daily Multivitamin + Electrolyte Powder.  It's loaded with B vitamins and natural Green Coconut Electrolytes to help you feel your absolute best.
